Cataracts are a clouding of your eye’s natural lens, making it hard to see clearly. Most cataracts happen because of normal changes in your eyes as you age. In fact, over half of all Americans over age 80 have either had a cataract or cataract surgery. Our eye care team is experienced in diagnosing and treating a range of eye issues, including cataracts. If surgery is necessary, we will connect you with a skilled cataract surgeon near you.
How are cataracts diagnosed?
During your comprehensive eye exam, we will carefully examine your eyes for signs of cataract formation. If we see a cataract and the cloudiness is impacting your vision significantly, our optometrist will refer you to a trusted and respected surgeon for cataract surgery, the only known cure for cataracts. Ultimate Eyecare Santa Fe will be there for you throughout the surgical process, providing pre- and post-cataract surgery care.
What to expect during and after cataract surgery
During cataract surgery, the surgeon replaces your eye’s natural lens with a new artificial lens to restore your vision. Cataract surgery is generally performed on an outpatient basis by an ophthalmologist (eye surgeon) in a surgical center or hospital using local anesthesia. It’s a common procedure with a high success rate, usually causing little or no discomfort. Well over 90% of operations successfully restore useful vision with a low complication rate.
Following cataract surgery, our team will continue to provide ongoing care and support during the recovery period. We will schedule regular follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure optimal healing.
